Seasoned Designer Luis shares how BASHI helps him expand his portfolio.

What caught your interest in participating in this opportunity?
I received an e-mail from Kyle after he could find my portfolio online. Then I saw the website, and it looked interesting to me. Actually, I’m working for a company and been designing the same kind of products for 9 years. I have been giving some thought to the possibility of also designing different products to leave my comfort zone. Because as an industrial designer, I always look forward to improve my skills, gain experience, and expand my professional horizons. The BASHI platform looked appealing to me because it allows me to do just that.

What caught your interest in participating in this BOPP?
What caught my interest in the GOATS opportunity was the colors and graphics of the inspiration board that GOATS provided as well as their intro video on their website. As a textile designer, color is what really speaks to me. It can say a lot about the mood or vibe you are going for and with GOATS, I could just tell who they were by looking at that and easily see that they were all about having fun and being yourself. I was also deeply inspired by the description of their brand and that they celebrate people from all backgrounds. It's so nice to hear of a company that promotes acceptance and love because we all need more of that in our lives.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
Working on this particular opportunity gave me the freedom to design when an idea came to mind and allowed me to make my own schedule at my own time. I personally love this aspect because I can work at my own pace and set myself goals for each day. I didn't feel the pressure to complete this project in a certain amount of time rather it just came naturally and was really relaxing. The more I do these opportunities, the more I learn new personal skills as well as design skills, which is a huge plus.

Would you try out for future BOPPs?
Oh yes, definitely! I really look forward to future BOPPS and catch myself looking at BASHI's site daily to see if any new opportunities have been updated or not. I think BASHI is a very unique platform that reaches so many talented designers and artists. I think it's such a great, positive, platform that brings together people from different backgrounds. I believe in BASHI and cannot wait to see where the future goes for them!

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
Overall, I think BASHI does a great job of having opportunities for various creatives but I do think it would be really neat to see more unique opportunities from brands & retailers like GOATS shoe designs or even a jewelry design opportunity for jewelry artists and illustrators alike to collaborate and submit ideas for future jewelry collections.

What caught your interest in participating in this BOPP?
As a recent graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology, I am educated in women's fashion design and experienced with graphic design with additional skills amongst other creative outlets. I absolutely love shoes and when I read about the GOATS opportunity I knew I had to try my hand at designing artwork that brought my passions together. Everyone loves a story and that's one of my favorite things about being a designer and creative. After reading through the brief and the GOATS about "our story" page on their website, I knew I had to design something that told their story. I immediately became attached to seeing this artwork through and working on a project for such an innovative brand.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
Being a recent graduate, this opportunity gave me the ability to continue to strengthen my skills as I figure out the career path I want to take. Between applying to jobs, interviewing, and working on building my own brand, this opportunity allowed me to build my own schedule with a real deadline that pushed me to get the job done. Being on my own schedule, also provided me with the ability to work on my designs whenever an idea came to mind and then going back to edit after letting the idea stand. Working on my own time allowed me to truly be passionate about this project. I was able to show my skills solely based on my work instead of going through an entire resume/interview process, which made the creative process much more fun without so much pressure.

Would you try out for future BOPPs?
Of course! I am very excited to see what the future holds for the Bashi Platform and how I can continue to utilize my full creative potential on projects that will become real products. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than seeing an idea come to life!

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
I am open to any creative opportunities from brands and retailers. I love being a part of the Bashi Platform and working with innovative brands that challenge my creative and technical skills to help me grow as a designer.

What caught your interest in participating in this BOPP?
The topic of this BOPP interested me because was about animals and I work mainly with them. I've already worked many times with fashion company and I liked it very much! I think that my style suit very well with fashion products because I work with bright colors and a lot of graphics lines and design that are cool on clothes.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
In this case I made a brand new custom work for SJ team, so I worked as for a normal commission work with the timing I indicated to the SJ team. I scanned the work step by step and then I sent the scan of the final drawing by email. Not having to carry out the physical shipment of the work but only the scans via email has simplified and speeded up the work a lot. In this case I had to organize the work well to be able to deliver the drawing on time, but I could join this BOPP also with an already made drawing, as long as it was suitable for this BOPP. I think that this is a great opportunity to have a purpose for an already work to be able to apply quickly.

Would you try out for future BOPPs?
Yes, I think that I will take a look on future BOPP to check out if there is something that I can join!

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
I like so much this opportunity to work with brands and retailers, for me, as artist, is nice to see how a drawing can be transformed in a finished product ready for sale. And I think that for the company is a great opportunity to work with creatives and artists because they will be sure of having a unique and personalized product. I love creative collaborations! I would like to be able to follow the entire production process that takes place after delivering the drawing and see the final product! Some companies I worked with sent me a sample of the product and this was very nice!

Did you have any questions, concerns or call-outs regarding the post? (verbiage, imagery, listed key dates, etc.)
The brief was clear and to the point, however the quantity of CADs I could submit was open ended - it may have been more beneficial to put a cap on the number of designs a person can submit.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
It is quite similar to my daily workflow, however I do not usually focus of sportswear so this was a nice change, I also don't often work on designing prints as we use out of house print designers for this.

Would you try out for future BOPPs?
Yes, 100% it's a perfect way to boost morale, branch out into other areas of design and earn a little extra money!

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
I am of course interested in seeing more prints and textiles opportunities as that's where my expertise lays. I would also love to see more opportunities for graphics, logo, and packaging for hard and soft goods, as well as for digital medias. I have always been interested in all fields of design so I'm really open to any opportunity that could challenge me to think past what I know or to encourage me to brush up and take on new skills.

What caught your interest in participating in this BOPP?
I've always been interested in expanding the freelance side of my career. Many of the opportunities on the market currently are over saturated and encourage/attract quantity over quality. I appreciated the extremely detailed prompt overview and requirements as this sort of weeds out the people who may be flooding an opportunity else where with multiple sub par submissions, rather than taking the time to curate a thoughtful submission. It was also great to see a clear timeline/deadline displayed so I could have the flexibility to plan working on the submission around my schedule.

Did you have any questions, concerns or call-outs regarding the post? (verbiage, imagery, listed key dates, etc.)
I did have some questions regarding the the specific opportunity I participated in. Some of the technical details didn't line up and since this prompt was a field that is my expertise, I found it a bit confusing since I had my industry knowledge going in. But overall I thought the post was pretty clear and well organized.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
I would say this was pretty similar to my daily workflow. I did have to think about my timeline and how much time I could allot given that this was just a submission and there was the possibility that I would not be chosen. It definitely did fit in pretty seamlessly since I'm constantly researching and thinking of new ideas for my day job and personal work. So planning and creating a submission fit hand in hand with what I already do daily.

Would you try out for future BOPPs?
Yes, definitely! I'm looking forward to seeing what other opportunities will be available!

What caught your interest in participating in this Opportunity?
Having never had much luck on other online creative platforms that are too saturated – I was excited to see that BASHI offered a fresh take with high quality Opportunities. I approached this brief as an exciting challenge to create something new and interesting and really showcase my aesthetic.

How does this compare to your daily workflow?
It was great to have a brief and no other real constructions on design. Since I was submitting as a “bid” I felt I could exercise my creativity more so than I would getting hired on a project basis or otherwise. I definitely had to account for my time and allocate the project a certain amount, so that if I did not get selected, it would not compromise my “day job”.

Would you try out for future BASHI Opportunities?
Yes, absolutely! I am excited to see what’s next and how I can get more involved!

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
I would love to see more design Opportunities in swim/cover ups/womenswear and accessories. I would also like to see Opportunities for stationary or packaging! I think it’s great that even though my expertise lies in swim – there is no restriction in applying for creative projects, like there would be with a resume/portfolio based application!

Huge thanks to one of our BASHI Creators - Emma Rubinson

What caught your interest in participating in this Opportunity?

Did you have any questions, concerns or call-outs regarding the Opportunity post? (verbiage, imagery, listed key dates, etc.)
I actually thought the site was very well organized and clear. I wouldn’t have submitted if the site wasn’t so transparent and I was impressed by how well thought out it was from a designer’s perspective.

How was this experience for you even though you weren’t selected? Was the early bird incentive interesting to you?
It was good to get feedback but given I was in the middle of final exams I wasn’t able to prioritize it as much as I would have wanted to. I can give a better answer for this after another project which will be a better gauge.

Would you try out for future BASHI Opportunities?
Yes! Looking forward to some more creative ones.

What type of Opportunities would you be interested in seeing from Brands & Retailers?
Flats and prints are the easiest to do remotely, so I think that’s a great start. I’ve also seen other freelance sites do graphic design and logo work, which could definitely apply in the fashion world too! I’m a huge textiles person, and I do a lot of fabric manipulation so I’d be interested to make samples of textiles but those would likely be for couture/runway tier labels rather than industry fashion. If I think of anything else I’ll let you know :)
